Business Case Analysis

Paying for idle bandwidth? Evaluate whether web-based file transfer is best for your business.

How to Determine the Best File Transfer Tool >>

How to Determine the Best File Transfer Tool

Total Cost of Ownership: CapEx vs. OpEx

Legacy MFT solutions typically follow a CapEx (capital expenditure) model. You pay for maximum capacity up front – including hardware procurement, maintenance, seat licenses, and idle bandwidth.

The MASV MFT model (OpEx): We align with your project cash flow. You don’t pay for software you aren’t using.

  • Pay-as-you-go: No subscription required. Ideal for fluctuating project work.
  • Value plans: High-volume users can lock in discounts via pre-buy credits or monthly subscriptions.
  • Custom enterprise plans: Tailored solutions for global organizations needing predictable billing.
MASV offers simple and flexible pricing plans.

The Speed Myth: Why You Don’t Need UDP Anymore

For two decades, UDP was the only way to send large files fast – but it came with failed transfers and configuration headaches. MASV web-based transfer leverages a global edge network of 400-plus servers combined with bandwidth optimization, allowing UDP-equivalent speeds (10Gbps+) without all the bad stuff, like catastrophic packet loss.

  • Firewall friendly: Uses standard port 443. No IT intervention required.
  • Global performance: Your package never travels far before it’s riding our global accelerated network of 400-plus servers.
  • Bandwidth saturation: MASV uses up to 95% of your available bandwidth, without being a network bully.
  • Network bonding: Our free Desktop App bonds multiple internet connections for increased speed and reliability.
  • Relentless reliability: If a transfer is interrupted, MASV auto-resumes exactly where it left off.

An Enterprise-Grade Security Posture

Speed is irrelevant if your content leaks. MASV is engineered for the strict compliance needs of data-intensive industries, from media & entertainment to geospatial to AI modeling.

Our compliance stack:

  • TPN Gold Shield: Verified by the Motion Picture Association’s Trusted Partner Network (TPN) for content security.
  • ISO 27001 & SOC 2 Type II: Compliant with enterprise-grade data protection standards.
  • GDPR & PIPEDA: Compliant with regional data protection standards.
  • Strong encryption: All transfers are protected by TLS 1.2 (in flight) and AES-256 (at rest).
  • Access Controls: Single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), user permissions, password-protected downloads, and more.
MASV is TPN, ISO, SOC 2, GDPR, PIPEDA compliant
Cloud integrations

The No-Code Integration Ecosystem

Legacy MFT solutions often require complex scripting, paid professional services, and other software to connect with cloud or connected on-prem storage. MASV is different: We offer native, no-code integrations with the tools you use every day. Simply connect your storage, set up an automation, and let MASV handle the rest.

  • Cloud storage: Configure automatic uploads to 15-plus cloud storage platforms – including Amazon S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, and Microsoft Azure – in less than five minutes.
  • Connected on-prem storage: Quickly connect to Amazon EBS/EFS, Synology, QNAP, Jellyfish, OpenDrives, or use MASV Agent to add auto uploads to virtually any connected storage device.
  • Media asset management: Direct ingest into Frame.io, Iconik, MediaSilo, Mimir, and other MAMs.
  • Collaboration: Receive instant Slack or Teams notifications when a delivery completes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a managed file transfer (MFT) solution?

Managed file transfer (MFT) is enterprise software that secures and automates data exchange. However, not all MFTs are the same. Legacy MFTs (like Aspera, Signiant, or GoAnywhere) are server-based solutions that require hardware maintenance and IT management. Modern MFTs (like MASV) are cloud native, offering superior security and automation without the need to procure and set up servers, install software, manage updates, or configure complex firewalls.

How much does an MFT solution cost?

Cost is the biggest differentiator. Legacy MFT solutions typically use a CapEx model, requiring upfront  license and hardware purchases ($5,000–$50,000+), annual maintenance fees, eventual hardware upgrades, and costs for idle bandwidth. MASV disrupts this with a flexible OpEx model, where you pay $0 for software and infrastructure and can use the pricing model that works best for you (pay-as-you-go, pre-buys, subscriptions, or enterprise custom pricing).

What industries use MFT software?

MFT is essential for industries moving sensitive, high-value, or massive data sets. The primary users are media & entertainment and post-production (for raw footage and DCPs), geospatial (for GIS and aerial datasets), live broadcast and news (for gameday footage and deadline-driven reporter content), creative agencies (for marketing content), healthcare (for patient records/HIPAA compliance), and legal (for eDiscovery).

Why should I switch from Aspera/Signiant if I already paid for the license?

Because the license is only the visible cost. You are likely still paying to procure hardware and annual maintenance fees (typically 20% of the original cost), idle bandwidth you don’t use, and internal IT hours to manage updates, server patches, and to help users with technical or usability problems. MASV eliminates all these ongoing cost centers for a far greater file transfer return on investment.

Do I need to open firewall ports for MASV like I do for UDP?

No. This is a massive security advantage of MASV: Legacy MFTs often require opening UDP port 33001 (or a range of high-number ports), which creates a permanent expanded attack surface on your network. MASV tunnels high-speed traffic through standard TCP port 443 (HTTPS). This means you get 10Gbps speeds without asking your CISO to compromise network security.

Our team is growing. How much does it cost to add new users on MASV?

Zero. This is a fundamental difference between MASV and legacy MFTs, which charge per seat or require you to buy user packs. MASV allows unlimited users and unlimited admins on every account for free. You only pay for the data you move – not the people moving it.

Aspera uses the FASP protocol. Is MASV's web-based transfer really as fast?

Yes. Ten years ago, UDP (FASP) was the only way to beat latency. Today, HTTPS and global edge networks have closed that gap. MASV saturates connections to up to 95 percent of your available bandwidth (up to 10Gbps) just like UDP, but with higher reliability, no packet loss, and without throttling your network for other users.

See the proof: Learn how MASV’s file acceleration technology actually works.

Can I use MASV with my existing on-prem storage?

Yes. You don’t have to move everything to the cloud to use MASV. The MASV Agent can be installed on your local server to act as a bridge. It gives you the speed of a cloud transfer while writing files directly to your local SAN/NAS, essentially replacing your legacy MFT server with a lightweight, auto-updating software agent.

Why is FTP no longer used?

FTP sends credentials in plain text, making it a security risk. It’s also an outdated technology with a primitive user interface that can be extremely challenging for inexperienced users. While legacy MFT replaced FTP with proprietary UDP protocols (which introduced new firewall headaches), MASV replaces FTP and legacy MFT with accelerated web-based transfer offering the security of HTTPS, the speed of UDP, and the ease of use of drag-and-drop without the vulnerability of open ports that FTP or legacy UDP solutions require.
